FUE vs DHI vs Sapphire: Which Hair Transplant Method Is Right for You?

Modern hair transplant clinic equipment

If you've started researching hair transplants, you've probably come across three main technique names: FUE, DHI, and Sapphire FUE. Understanding the differences between them is important — but it's also simpler than most clinics make it sound.

Here's a straightforward comparison to help you understand which method might be right for you.

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

FUE is the most established modern hair transplant technique and the foundation that DHI and Sapphire build upon.

How it works

Individual hair follicles are extracted from the donor area (usually the back of the head) using a micro punch tool, typically 0.6–0.9mm in diameter. The surgeon then creates small channels in the recipient area and places the extracted grafts into these channels using fine forceps.

Cons

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation)

DHI uses a specialised tool called a Choi implanter pen that combines the channel creation and graft placement into a single step.

How it works

Grafts are extracted the same way as FUE. The difference is in the implantation: instead of creating channels first and then placing grafts, the Choi pen creates the channel and implants the graft simultaneously. The surgeon loads each graft into the pen and implants it directly.

Pros

Cons

Sapphire FUE

Sapphire FUE is an evolution of traditional FUE that uses blades made from sapphire crystal instead of steel to create the recipient channels.

How it works

The extraction process is identical to standard FUE. The key difference is in the channel creation: sapphire blades are smoother and harder than steel, allowing the surgeon to create smaller, more precise V-shaped incisions. This leads to less tissue damage and faster healing.

The Most Important Factor

Here's what most articles won't tell you: the surgeon matters more than the technique.

A highly experienced surgeon using standard FUE will deliver better results than an inexperienced surgeon using the latest sapphire blades. Our partner surgeon has performed over 21,000 procedures across all three techniques. That depth of experience means they can recommend and execute the best approach for each individual patient.

The technique is a tool. The surgeon is the artist.
