The Complete Hair Transplant Aftercare Guide

Hair transplant aftercare

Your hair transplant procedure is just the beginning. How you care for your transplanted grafts in the weeks and months that follow has a direct impact on your final results. This guide covers everything you need to know — week by week.

Week-by-Week Recovery Timeline

Days 1–3: Immediate Post-Op

You'll have small scabs (crusts) in the transplanted area. Some swelling around the forehead is normal — it usually peaks around day 3 and subsides by day 5. Sleep with your head elevated at 45 degrees. Your clinic will provide a special pillow and spray solution.

Days 4–7: Gentle Washing Begins

You'll start washing your hair using the technique shown by your clinic — typically a gentle patting motion with lukewarm water and a special shampoo. No rubbing, scratching, or picking at scabs. The crusts will begin to soften and fall off naturally.

Days 7–14: Scabs Fall Off

Most crusts will have fallen off by day 10–14. The transplanted area may look pink or slightly red — this is normal. You can return to most normal activities, but avoid strenuous exercise, swimming, and direct sun exposure.

Weeks 2–4: Shock Loss

This is the phase that catches most patients off guard: the transplanted hairs will fall out. This is called shock loss and it's completely normal. The hair follicles are still alive beneath the skin — they're entering a resting phase before new growth begins.

Months 2–3: The Waiting Phase

Not much visible happens during this period. The follicles are resting and preparing for new growth. This is the hardest phase psychologically — be patient. The results are coming.

Months 3–6: New Growth Begins

You'll start to see fine, thin hairs emerging. They may look wispy at first — this is normal. The new hairs will gradually thicken over the coming months. By month 6, you should see noticeable improvement.

Months 6–9: Significant Growth

This is when most patients start to feel genuinely excited. Hair density increases noticeably, and the transplanted hairs begin to blend naturally with your existing hair. You can style your hair normally.

Months 9–12: Final Results

Full results typically take 12–18 months. By month 12, around 80–90% of the final result is visible. The hairs will continue to thicken and mature for a few more months.

The Do's

The Don'ts

The most common mistake patients make is panicking during the shock loss phase (weeks 2–4). We can't stress this enough: it's completely normal. The follicles are alive. New hair will grow. Trust the process.

PRP Treatment: Boosting Your Results

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) treatment is included in our packages. It involves drawing a small amount of your blood, separating the platelet-rich plasma, and injecting it into the transplanted area. The growth factors in PRP can help:

Long-Term Hair Care

Once your transplanted hair has fully grown (12–18 months), it's permanent. These are your own natural hair follicles, transplanted from the donor area, and they will continue to grow for life.

However, your existing non-transplanted hair may continue to thin over time. To maintain the best overall result, we recommend:
